La asamblea general de la ONU proclamó el 11 de diciembre como Día Internacional de las Montañas, pero 10 años antes Naciones Unidas ya había aprobado un plan de acción ‘Programa 21’ en el que incluía un aparatado sobre ‘Ordenación de los Sistemas Frágiles: desarrollo sostenible de las zonas de montaña’.
En 2023 el tema del Día Internacional de las montañas es la ‘Restauración de los ecosistemas de montaña’. De esta manera se quiere poner el foco en la importancia de los ecosistemas de montaña y sensibilizar acerca de su relevancia, pedir soluciones, inversiones y unas buenas y mejores prácticas que sirvan para reducir la vulnerabilidad y aumentar la capacidad de las montañas para adaptarse a un futuro incierto, con amenazas diarias y eventos climáticos extremos.
