‘‘From agreement to action: build back biodiversity’
The United Nations proclaimed May 22 International Day for Biological Diversity to increase understanding of biodiversity issues and raise awareness of the importance of the flora, fauna and genetic diversity found in each.
The 2023 commemoration is special because a historic agreement was reached: the Kumming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This is a document signed in December 2022 that sets concrete goals and actions to halt and reverse the loss of nature by 2050.
That is why this year’s slogan is “From agreement to action: rebuilding biodiversity.” This slogan promotes the idea that, now that we have a globally agreed plan of action, we must implement all the measures envisioned by the agreement by 2030. Only then can we achieve protected and sustainable biodiversity by 2050.
We must continue to cultivate our relationship with nature on a daily basis. Despite technological advances, artificial intelligence, and our addiction to screens, ……what we really depend on is our ecosystem. Let’s do everything in our power to make sure it’s a healthy ecosystem that allows us to continue to have water, food, electricity and energy.
